Glossary

  • Backglass Piece of decorated glass (or plexiglass) inserted in game's head. It's the most fragile part of the game and has many times suffured the outrages of time and bad storage conditions.
  • Ball Different sizes exist. 3" 3/4 is one of the used sizes. 4" 1/2 is used for big balls. United Midget Alley Used 2" balls. Some big balls have a hole to put the thumb in.
  • Bowler A game using a ball instead of a puck.
  • Deluxe United made a DeLuxe version of games in the 1950s. This version included the triple match feature.
  • Frame A set of 10 pins to turn upside down.
  • High score for the week Many features were invented to attract the players. This one entitled the best players to write their name on the backblass! It is present on the United 6 player shuffle alley.
  • Pin Bottle shape piece of wood or plastic that make up a frame.
  • Puck Disk of metal you slide on the board to tumble the pins. The puck does not touch the pins, it touches contatcs that fired solenoid moving the pins. Puck bowlers where invented in the 50s.
  • Regular United made a Regular version of games in the 1950s. This version did not include the triple match feature.
  • Shuffle Game using a puck instead of a ball. These games where also called puck bowler but they do not use balls.
  • Solenoid A coil of wire wound and a piece of metal inserted in it. When power is applied to the coil the piece of metal moves and so does what is attached to it.
  • Spare Knocking down 10 pins in 2 shots.
  • Strike Knocking down 10 pins in 1 shot.
